Intercity buses in Taiwan are also known as coaches, its ticket costs are cheaper than rail tickets and offers 10-20% discounts for their return ticket purchase. Other discounts are also available during off peak hours.
Due to their competitive market, almost every coach company offers spacious seating and personalized LCD TV, wireless internet for their popular lines such as Taipei to Taichung, Taipei to Tainan and Taipei to Kaohsiung. During low traffic hours, coaches taking the highway routes could arrive at its destination faster than trains making it a convenient way to travel for backpackers.
Tickets can be purchased at the coach companies' stop counters, some coaches allow passengers to board first and collect the fare while you are on the road. Every coach offer different stops at each destination city, passengers can decide which stop to get off.
There are currently over 10 coach companies in Taiwan, Taiwan Bus Corp is among the largest with designed routes to every part of Taiwan and offers direct bus to tourist spots. Their bus stops are mostly around train stations or next to city center making any transit very simple. |

Every city has their own city bus in Taiwan, although with different appearances their operation is very similar. The route and bus number are displayed at the front of every bus where you get on via the front door and get off via the back door. Bus fares are different for every city, for example Taipei is $15, Taichung $18 and Kaohsiung $12. Passengers can insert the coins in the fare box next to the bus driver but no changes are given only Taipei city bus accepts Easy Card payments and offers transit discounts.
Most major city buses have electronic monitors at the front of the bus next to the driver's seat which displays name of the next stop and some buses even have Chinese and English announcements for the approaching stops, passengers need to press the bus bell to inform driver that you will be getting off at the next stop.
